We are still working to help end homelessness in our community, and surrounding area. In our last post, we talked with Kevin; a homeless man with a strong message for you.

Our fundraiser – to raise $80,000 for the first Momma’s Houses facility – is still going. We set the end date as January 27th. Of course, we’ve raised around $40 so far, so we will be re-launching the fundraiser once it ends – if we haven’t met our goal by that time.

$80,000 may seem like a giant chunk of money, but not if:

only…

16,000 people give just $5 each (16,000 x $5 = $80,000).

Or, if only 8,000 people gave $10 (8,000 x $10 = $80,000).

Eight to ten thousand people isn’t a huge number – especially considering how many people exist in our world.

How miraculous is the meal barrel story? It’s one I’ve always loved, as it shows God’s ability to bless our willingness to give, by supplying our needs abundantly.

The following scriptures are found in 1 Kings 17:10-16 (KJV).

¹⁰So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

We spent New Year’s Eve delivering handmade scarves, hats, and prayer pillows to a homeless shelter.

This box of scarves are handmade (crocheted) by a very special teenager we know – who just happens to have a very big heart. (We love you!)

Our dear friend was VERY busy sewing and stuffing these prayer pillows and making the above scarves. She also donated those hats she had made. She and her husband are a huge help to us and we appreciate them so very much. They were right there with us today, delivering to the homeless shelter!

Prayer Pillows

Prayer pillows are very special. They’re also very powerful. People from all over the world, of all denominations, of all ages and walks of life, pray over the prayer pillows daily.

Everyone who holds these prayer pillows prays for:

1.  Everyone who has a prayer pillow – and all of their loved ones – to have salvation.

2.  That God will heal all sickness and disease.

3.  That God will restore finances.

4.  You add your prayers to these.

Our prayer is that in 2010, God will move the mountains that are in your lives and restore your hopes and dreams. We will be working harder than we’ve ever worked – we’re on a mission to house the hurting, and the homeless.

Momma’s Houses Fundraising

We wanted to update you on the total amount we’ve raised for the Momma’s Houses cause. So far, we’ve received $30.81 via the ChipIn button, and one donation via the PayPal button.

Also, a $20 donation came in toward Momma’s Houses today. Praise the Lord!

Many people think small amounts don’t add up quickly, but it takes the first step to run a marathon!

 

So, with the PayPal donation, the ChipIn donations, and the $20 cash donation, the balance still needed (for the building) is:

$79,933.37

Let’s work harder than ever in 2010 to help end homelessness – we’ve already started!

We recently delivered goody bags to nearby homeless shelters, for Christmas.

After passing out the bags, Christmas cards, and giant candy canes, we asked the person in charge what else could we do. He told us there is a desperate need for personal hygiene items and warm blankets.

Our small family ministry tries to help people in numerous ways, but we will definitely help even more (and that’s our heart’s desire) if we have additional funding.

We’ve decided to make toiletry bags. Do keep in mind that these toiletry items need to be travel size, or small.  The homeless are usually always on the go and can’t carry large bottles or heavy items around with them.

Below is a list of things we plan on providing. We’ll be making individual bags to give away.

• wipes
• hand sanitizer
• chap stick
• hair brush/comb
• waterless shampoo
• Kleenex
• big zip lock bags (to put the above items in)

We Also Want to Provide:

Fulfilling these needs are merely scratching the surface. Our ultimate desire is to help these people get off the street permanently and see them in their own homes, living life as they should be. That’s the reason we’re also on a Mission for Momma’s Houses.

Highways and Byways Ministries believes in helping people all year long, but the holidays do bring the opportunity to spread some cheer and let the homeless know that they aren’t forgotten, especially during a time that represents joy and warmth with family and friends – blessings they aren’t fortunate enough to enjoy.

This year, we baked some homemade treats for a couple of homeless shelters. We prepared goody bags to hand out. Each bag contained a banana-walnut loaf, gingerbread muffin with old-fashioned butter glaze, a brownie, chocolate chip and sugar cookies, peppermint bark, plus a handwritten Christmas card. (We also handed out giant candy canes to each person once we got to the mission; not pictured.)

As we entered the Veteran’s Day Center, tired, weathered faces lit up; worried frowns turned into bright smiles; joy abounded – if only for a few minutes.

“You’ve brought smiles to so many faces today.”

“Thank you.”

“God bless you for doing this!”

“A Christmas card!”

“Oh, it’s banana bread!”

“I haven’t seen a big candy cane like that in a long time!”

Those are some of the quotes coming from the people who received their goody bags today. Many of them were Veterans. They served our country, yet they wander the streets; homeless.

Additional needs have been brought to our attention (we’ll be sharing them in an upcoming post). We are taking donations so we can help more than our small family ministry is able to. Help us help others…
